Although Costa Rica bathes in the Pacific Ocean as well as in the Caribbean Sea, San José, the capital, is situated in the center, at 1160 meters above sea level. Whether you head East, North, South or West you are sure to end up in a fabulous location. On the Caribbean coastline, where Christopher Colombo first touched American soil, there are several national parks and plenty of beaches. You certainly cannot miss Cahuita and the typical Puerto Viejo  as well as Boca del Toro, famous for its colourful frogs.  If you choose to head north, you will end up in the tropical paradise of El Tortuguero, a national park located on canals crossing the mysterious rainforest, populated with jaguars, turtles, caimans, monkeys and many other species of fauna. Wherever you look, you can only be grateful for the ever renewing shades of green and the most beautiful and colourful flowers you can think of.

The Pacific coastline also has many national parks, among which Manuel Antonio which has the largest number of species of animals, Palo Verde and Guanacaste National Parks, as well as hundreds of small, hardly crowded beaches: Playa Hermosa, Playa del Coco, Playa Ocotal and many others, with the absolute perfect atmosphere of Gulf of Papagayo, where the shell-covered beach lies right in front of the jungle. Moreover, all along the coast you can find beautiful hotels with beach, swimming pool, golf course and whatever else you might dream of. No need to fly to San José if you want to visit the Northern Pacific beaches, Liberia, in the province of Guanacaste, has its own airport and most hotels provide transportation to and fro.

However, Costa Rica is not only “costa” – or coastlines. It is a volcanic country and a visit to one of it many volcanoes is due, in particular Volcano Arenal, where you can bathe in thermal waters forming small waterfalls which give every layer a different temperature, but where you also find lush forests and a beautiful lake.
